Breakfast On Pluto

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 21 February 2007 09:42 (A review of Breakfast on Pluto)

On second watch it hits home just how amazingly bizarre this film is. Only Neil Jordan could mix the topics of transgender and the IRA twice in one career and come out smelling of roses. Cillian Murphy is a riot in this flick and makes one hell of a convincing woman.

Children of Men

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 21 February 2007 09:39 (A review of Children of Men)

A clever premise with a totally unexpected twist at the end of the first act that took my enjoyment of the film to a higher level. The cinematography really stands out and there's some decent performances on show, but I found some of the lower cast of characters extremely stereo-typical. Particularly the Geordie eco-warrior and his recital of Blaydon Races during an execution.

Award worthy

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 21 February 2007 09:33 (A review of The Wind that Shakes the Barley)

One of the most powerful films of 2006. If you didn't understand the troubles in Ireland before, you will by the time the end credits roll. Ken Loach and his lead 'Cillian Murphy' deserved awards recognition for this film.

Saved by Ken

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 21 February 2007 08:52 (A review of Tickets)

Three stories of human interaction aboard a single train trip from Eastern Europe to Rome, each driven by a different director (Abbas Kiarostami, Ken Loach, Ermanno Olmi)

Could of been a train wreck if it wasn't for Loach' hilarious trio of Glasgow Celtic fans boarding for the final section.

The chair shines

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 21 February 2007 08:48 (A review of The Puffy Chair)

A well written script which is hilarious at times, but lacks in the technical department. The chair is definitely the best actor on display.

Black Sunday

I watched this on television at the weekend, although the plot did keep me entertained the performances left a lot to be desired.

Stop milking Murray

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 21 February 2007 08:25 (A review of Broken Flowers)

Bill Murray is one of those actors who can be funny without even opening his mouth, but directors are really starting to milk this too much. I'd rather not have to endure three minute shots of Murray sitting tight lipped and upright on a sofa every time he dons his indie-head. The transitions here were clumsy and over-long. This is the laziest film-making I've witnessed from Jarmusch. The plot didn't take me anywhere worth journeying to and left me with more questions than I had going in. BrokeN Flowers only saving grace is the ever impressive Jeffrey Wright. No second watch for me.

Murderball

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 21 February 2007 08:18 (A review of Murderball)

Interesting, insightful, informative, colourful, laugh out loud funny, and touching. One of the most entertaining sports documentaries I have ever seen.

The Aristocrats!

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 21 February 2007 08:16 (A review of The Aristocrats)

'No Nudity, No Violence, just Unspeakable Obscenity'. Prepare to either walk out in disgust or fall off your seat laughing. I fell out of my seat several times just laughing at the people who walked out in disgust. Bob Saget's clips are particularly memorable, and the South Park one had me in stitches, but it was Sarah Silverman who made me laugh the most.

Cheesy anime

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 21 February 2007 08:11 (A review of Steamboy)

If Jerry Bruckheimer produced anime this is what it would be like. The animation was visually stunning at times, but this thing is cheesier than the fifteen year old sock I just found under my bed.
